You know you're in Malibu when...
The Left Coast, it’s like cereal, anyone who’s not a fruit or a nut is a flake, and any number of the clichés you wish to throw in there. The simple fact of the matter is they’re deserved. For all its beauty, so cal is home to more weirdoes, creeps, freaks, and yes, beautiful people than anywhere else in the world. Yesterday I ran into a number of situations that made me think “only in Malibu…”
You know you’re in Malibu when…
3) When you put $15 worth of gas in your car and it buys you 4.7 gallons of gas.
2) When you’re stuck in a parking lot because some nimrod can’t get his super-maneuverable Porsche into a parking spot and take 4 tries backing up and trying again.
I was telling Micah this as we were walking through Ralph’s getting groceries, and had to stop at this point as we were checking out. The grocery store was pretty busy, but there was only one person in the express lane. So, I jumped in the lane, and as I was checking out the woman in front of me dropped some of her change, so I picked it up and handed it to her. She tried to tell me not to worry about it, it was just a penny after all, but I had already gotten it. Anyway, I checked out and we headed out the door and I started to continue with my top three moments:
The number one you know you’re in Malibu moment…
Micah says “You mean that back there?”
“What, you mean, going to Ralph’s?”
“No dude, that woman you gave the penny to…”
“What are you talking about?”
“That was Liv Tyler”

Yes, Liv Tyler after going back and looking at pictures, I have to agree, it was indeed. I guess that would explain why people weren’t in that checkout lane. It seems that most people tend to be intimidated by famous people. And I was making sure that she didn’t walk out of the grocery store without the penny she had dropped. …yeah, so indeed we have a new “you know you’re in Malibu when… moment.”
The old number one? As I was walking out of the bank earlier that day, I held the door open for an elderly woman as I was leaving. Her response: the patented evil death glare. Yep, shocks me every time.
Oh, one more thing… I have a Mohawk now. Probably won’t last long. I just needed a haircut and with a week of school, dead week, and then finals ahead of a college student, strange things happen.

I did that.
Wow. I have some "you know you're in Texas" stories but none of them involve celebrities checking out at the express lane. I hope you're upcoming finals go well. (Mine aren't until early May.) I might be calling you soon to ask some more questions about Pepperdine, but I'm going to a reception here in Dallas on Thursday, so they might answer my questions there.
When are you in Dallas next?
